What Is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer refers to any cancer that begins in the breast tissue, and while it can develop in both men and women, it’s far more common in women. While there are many subtypes of breast cancer that affect different structures like fat, connective tissue, lymph nodes, blood vessels, ducts, or lobules – the glands that produce milk – the most common form of breast cancer is ductal carcinoma.
Ductal carcinoma begins in the cells lining the ducts, which are thin tubes that carry milk from the lobules to the nipple. If the cancer is only present in the lining of these ducts, it’s referred to as carcinoma in situ. However, once it spreads beyond the lining of the ducts to surrounding tissue, it’s known as invasive breast cancer.
Key Facts About Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer for women, second only to skin cancer. Every year, there are more than 250,000 new cases of breast cancer in the US, making up about 15% of all cancer cases. More than 3 million women either live with or have had breast cancer in the United States – accounting for almost 1% of the entire population.
Thankfully, breast cancer often has a good outlook if caught early on. The 5-year survival rate for breast cancer overall is almost 90%, and that number increases when the cancer is caught early on. Most breast cancer cases are caught early, when the cancer is still localized, which means it hasn’t spread beyond the primary tumor – and for these cases, the 5-year survival rate is 99%.
Even for more advanced stages of breast cancer, quality treatment can always provide hope. At Pasadena CyberKnife, we work with women and men suffering from any stage of breast cancer – and we’re proud to bring some of the best experts and technology in the world to every case we treat.
