What Makes Us a Top Lung Cancer Treatment Center in Los Angeles

Being diagnosed with lung cancer can be terrifying, but with the right team at your side, there’s always hope. Our cancer doctors are recognized leaders in their fields, and no matter how serious your diagnosis, we can work with you to develop a plan for treatment. And because we specialize in the noninvasive CyberKnife Radiotherapy System, we can treat cases that many other cancer centers can’t.

The CyberKnife Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy System is a unique cancer treatment that combines a variety of cutting-edge technologies to deliver high-dose radiation to the site of a tumor with pinpoint accuracy. CyberKnife is nonsurgical and noninvasive, attacking tumors anywhere in the body without the need for an incision.

When compared to conventional external radiation therapy, the CyberKnife System is revolutionary. It’s precise imaging system allows it to target an extremely high dose of radiation at a tumor only exactly where it’s needed, and the versatile robotic arm allows it to target the tumor from all angles. With sub-millimeter accuracy, CyberKnife can target cancerous cells with virtually no damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Painless & Comfortable Cancer Treatment

Because CyberKnife requires no surgeries or incisions, the entire treatment process is pain-free. In fact, you don’t have to do anything during treatment: you simply lie on a custom-molded body cradle while the robotic arm moves around your body to deliver its focused beam of radiation. You won’t have to deal with uncomfortable immobility devices: CyberKnife does all the work.

CyberKnife is particularly powerful for lung cancer because it solves one of the biggest problems of conventional radiotherapy: the movement of a tumor inside the body due to breathing and other involuntary bodily functions. Lung cancer tumors, which move around during radiotherapy as the patient breathes, are some of the most susceptible to this problem, which would have made it impossible to treat them with radiotherapy before CyberKnife.

The CyberKnife System, however, uses real-time imaging and tracking software to precisely monitor the movement of the tumor from moment to moment, correcting for displacement due to breathing and other bodily functions. With the help of a special vest and fiducial markers, which are tiny gold beads that are inserted into the tumor through an injection, CyberKnife can track the tumor’s movement and deliver radiation without the need for a brace.

Fewer Treatments Plus a Shorter Recovery Time

So how long does CyberKnife for lung cancer take? Most patient require between one and five treatment sessions in total, depending on the size and severity of the tumor. These sessions take between 30 and 90 minutes and are usually given consecutively, which means treatment lasts a maximum of 5 days.

Even better, CyberKnife treatment doesn’t require any overnight hospital stays. After your treatment session, you’re free to go about your day as normal, and many people are able to immediately return to their normal daily activities. After completing your treatment sessions, your doctor will monitor your progress with a series of follow-up scans.
