A New Way to Treat Head & Neck Cancer
Head and neck cancers are particularly difficult to treat with traditional treatment methods like surgery because often, the cancer is in close proximity to organs and parts of the body that are integral to daily life. Surgery to any part of the face, neck, or throat is necessarily extremely invasive and can require extended recovery periods, often leaving disfiguring scars that impede day-to-day life. But now, there’s a new way to treat head and neck cancer.
The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System is a world-class cancer treatment system that combines some of the most advanced medical technology on the market into a paradigm-shifting cancer treatment. CyberKnife uses advanced medical imaging, robotics, and laser systems to deliver high-dose radiation to a tumor with pinpoint accuracy, allowing us to effectively treat cancer without the need for invasive surgery. Thanks to the Synchrony Respiratory Tracking System, CyberKnife is able to track the movement of the tumor on a millisecond basis, adjusting and compensating for normal movement from breathing and protecting nearby tissues and cells. CyberKnife presents a safe, effective, and completely non-invasive cancer treatment system, providing a more convenient and comfortable method for cancer treatment than ever before.
The CyberKnife Treatment Process
Treating head and neck cancers using CyberKnife allows for a comfortable, convenient, and minimally impactful process that requires little recovery time. We perform the CyberKnife treatment as an outpatient procedure from our Pasadena cancer care facility, and the entire procedure takes only five consecutive days. Most patients are able to return to work or normal life almost immediately after completing the procedure, and many may continue working even while receiving the treatment.
The treatment process itself is simple, non-invasive, and painless. We’ll complete the treatment over the course of five sessions, each of which last roughly an hour, during a given week. During the sessions, all you have to do is lie comfortably on the treatment couch – CyberKnife’s robotic arm will rotate around you and compensate for movement from breathing, applying a finely-calibrated and precisely-targeted dose of radiation to your tumor while preventing damage to nearby cells. After we finish your treatment sessions, we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment to check on the progress of the treatment and ensure that the tumor is dying. After that, your treatment is complete – and you can get back to living your normal, healthy life.
