The American Medical Association (AMA) has made Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code changes to the recently released 2013 edition of the CPT Coding Manual. Along with other annual updates, the AMA added a new code for Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) treatment planning for thoracic lesions.

Beginning January 01, 2013 the following CPT code will be available for physicians to report their work and time when collaborating with the radiation oncologist to develop SRS/SBRT treatment plans.

CPT code 32701; thoracic target(s) delineation for stereotactic body radiation therapy (SRS/SBRT), (photon or particle beam), entire course of treatment.

CPT 31623 (2010 Bronchoscopy with fiducial markers)

In the past, reimbursement for thoracic surgeon’s and other healthcare professional’s roles in the treatment planning process, if available, has been highly variable. The AMA’s decision to create a code reimbursing for physician collaboration places needed emphasis on this important component of quality patient care
